In 1931, tent meetings began in Devils Lake, North Dakota. Under the direction of Blanche Brittain and Mildred Westerlund, the community's fist Pentecostal congregation formed. While originally held in a downtown hall, the meetings soon moved to a basement in the business district on Fourth Street. By the end of the year, Canadian Alex M. Selness had arrived and was pastoring the congregation.
On April 8, 1932, Lake Gospel Tabernacle was organized including in its roster the following charter members: Mrs. Alfred Abrahamson, Edward Abrahamson, Beatrice Abrahamson, Mrs. J.C.W. Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Gust Beckstrand, Mr. & Mrs. Emile Bendickson, Mr. & Mrs. E.S. Berg, Mr. & Mrs. Matt Bloomquist, Annie Cox, Mr. & Mrs. Lars Iverson, Mr. & Mrs. D.M. Parkinson, Mr. & Mrs. Gust Peterson, Inez Peterson, Charles Prowder, and Mr. & Mrs. Truman Tripp. On May 20, 1932, the new 36 x 60 foot building that had been built at 902 Third Street was dedicated.
The church remained at this site until 1978 when land was purchased at the current location at the corner Highway 20 and Ramsey 1. The final service was held at the Third Street church on January 21, 1979. Construction began on a new 50 x 84 foot steel frame building in 1980. The first service was held in the new building on April 19, 1981. Shortly thereafter, the official name of the church was changed to River of Life Chapel.
In 1999, construction began on an addition which included a new sanctuary and church offices. Later the old sanctuary was remodeled and turned into a youth area. The church was renamed River of Life Assembly of God.
